There is a myth that does damage.<\/p>\n
It goes like this: \"If you have enough faith, God protects you from darkness.\"<\/p>\n
It's not true. And the Bible says the exact opposite.<\/p>\n
Elijah was a prophet. In the chapter before, he looks stronger than ever. He has called fire down from heaven. He has prayed, and the rain has returned. Full of faith, clarity and strength.<\/p>\n
And in the next chapter he's sitting under a broom bush, asking to die.<\/p>\n
It is enough, Lord! Take my life.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
James says of Elijah: \"He was a human being just like us.\" Not: a weak man. Not: someone who lacked faith. But: a human being like us.<\/p>\n
What brought him down into the darkness? He focused on his feelings instead of the facts. He compared himself with others. He carried responsibility for things he couldn't control. And he exaggerated the negative: \"I am the only one left.\" It wasn't true. But in the darkness it felt true.<\/p>\n
Feelings are not facts. They often lie when we're at our lowest.<\/p>\n
And what did God do? No rebuke. No lecture about needing more faith.<\/p>\n
Read 1 Kings 19 slowly, and you see God working like a health coach. Five buckets he fills up in Elijah's life. One at a time.<\/p>\n
1. Honesty. Elijah says it out loud: \"It is enough!\" No facade, no pious phrases. You can't get well if you're not honest that you're sick. Sick sheep make themselves stiff and pretend nothing's wrong, because the wolves go after the weak. We often do the same. But health begins with honesty. And God can handle it.<\/p>\n
2. The body. God's first answer to a burned-out prophet? An angel with freshly baked bread and water. Twice. \"Get up and eat, or the journey will be too much for you.\" Sleep, food and water, before a single spiritual word. Sometimes we lose spiritual battles because the body is drained.<\/p>\n
3. The spirit. Then Elijah walks to Horeb, the mountain where you hear from God. And notice this: he has slept, eaten and put distance between himself and the threats. But inside he's still the same. New surroundings don't change what's within. On the mountain come wind, earthquake and fire, but God is in the gentle whisper. He asks: \"What are you doing here, Elijah?\" And Elijah gets to pour it all out: the fear, the anger, the loneliness, the exhaustion. God let him talk until he ran out of words. Then God changes the frame around the picture: you are not the only one. There are seven thousand left who have never bowed the knee. We often try to change the picture. God changes the frame, and we see it throughout Scripture.<\/p>\n
4. The work. Only now does Elijah get a task. Not everything at once, but a few concrete instructions. Often we're exhausted because we do everything everyone else expects. God narrows the focus: go back, do this. And the task is about sharing the burden with others instead of carrying it alone.<\/p>\n
5. The relationships. The last thing God gives him is not a plan. It's a person. Elisha. A friend who from that day carried the burden with him and in the end refused to leave him. Health doesn't hold without people close to us.<\/p>\n
Honesty. Body. Spirit. Work. Relationships. That was God's way back for a prophet who wanted to die. And the buckets are connected: when one runs dry, it pulls the others down with it.<\/p>\n
The Bible holds the dark place in more places than this one.<\/p>\n
Psalm 88, one of the darkest psalms in the Bible, doesn't end in praise. It ends with: \"You have taken my companions and loved ones from me; the darkness is my closest friend.\"<\/p>\n
No restoration. No happy ending. Just honesty. And God kept that psalm in his book, without demanding that it end happily.<\/p>\n
And Jesus said in Gethsemane, the night before he was arrested: \"My soul is overwhelmed with sorrow to the point of death.\" That's not poetry. It's psychological pain, said plainly.<\/p>\n
Having a hard time is not unbiblical.<\/p>\n
Struggling with dark thoughts and a heaviness that won't lift doesn't make you a bad Christian. It makes you human. It puts you in the company of Elijah, David and Jesus.<\/p>\n
What separates us from those who don't believe is not that we never fall. It's that we have somewhere to go when we do.<\/p>\n
