Zenia: You don't have to be a Christian to be a Dane. Muslims, Jews, atheists \u2014 they're just as Danish as everyone else.<\/p>\n
Auken: We are a Christian civilization. Our view of the human person, our freedom, our democracy didn't come out of nowhere. They have roots.<\/p>\n
Both have a point. And both can be right.<\/p>\n
But that debate isn't mine. I'm a pastor, not a politician. And that debate opens a question I can't leave alone.<\/p>\n
Because Auken actually draws a distinction I think is wise. There's a difference between a Christian civilization and the Christian religion. The civilization belongs to all of us. The religion is personal.<\/p>\n
And that's where I'm headed.<\/p>\n
Look around the world. In countries with Christian roots \u2014 Denmark, Norway, Canada \u2014 the starting point is that every human being has an inalienable dignity. That isn't a given of nature. It's theology that became culture. Jesus preached that free and slave, Jew and Greek, man and woman are all made in the image of God. That was a wild idea in year zero, and the leaders of the first church spent decades working out what it actually meant in practice. How you treat a slave. A widow. A stranger. Someone who has lost everything.<\/p>\n
They put words to something the world had never seen before: that a community is measured not by its strongest, but by how it treats the least among us.<\/p>\n
\"Whatever you did for one of the least of these, you did for me.\" \u2014 Jesus<\/p>\n
Compare that with countries where tribal bonds, clan structures or honor cultures still set the terms for who deserves care. There a widow with no male relatives is left to herself \u2014 or to the mercy of others. There a child with a disability is a shame on the family. There a woman who has been raped is an honor problem she herself is blamed for. There the one who leaves the faith of their tribe is not merely a stranger, but an enemy.<\/p>\n
This is not a judgment on people. But it is a difference in foundation. And that difference is not random. It follows from what you believe about the worth of a human being.<\/p>\n
We live on a Christian view of the human person. Most of us just don't know it.<\/p>\n
But here the political part stops. And here something else begins.<\/p>\n
Because there is something that sets Jesus apart from all other religion. Religions are about what we can do to become good enough. To reach God. To earn a place. There are rules and performances. A staircase we have to climb \u2014 and never quite know whether we've made it high enough.<\/p>\n
Jesus turned it upside down. He came down.<\/p>\n
He taught us that what he did was enough. That grace is not something we achieve \u2014 it's something we receive. Life with God does not begin with our initiative. It begins with his.<\/p>\n
He didn't start with religion. He started with relationship and community. He ate with tax collectors and sinners. He touched the unclean. He spoke with the woman at the well. He called fishermen by name and said: Follow me.<\/p>\n
No staircase. No checklist. An invitation from him to us.<\/p>\n
The very first Christians didn't call themselves \"Christians.\" That word was what the Romans called them \u2014 half mocking, half confused. They called themselves followers of the Way.<\/p>\n
The Way. Not a system. A person.<\/p>\n
Jesus said: \"I am the way, the truth and the life.\" That wasn't a cultural declaration. It was an invitation to relationship.<\/p>\n
You can enjoy the fruit of an apple tree without having planted it yourself. Or tended it.<\/p>\n
But what if you met the one who planted it? What if he's still there?<\/p>\n
That's the difference between Christian civilization and Christian life. Not whether you support Danish cultural heritage. Not whether you agree with Auken or Zenia. But whether you have personally met Jesus \u2014 and chosen to follow him.<\/p>\n
That is still what a Christian is. Not a cultural label. Not an entry in the state-church register. A person who says: I follow him.<\/p>\n
